In the Northern Edda stories the serpent Nidhogg (Níðhöggr) is held within the roots of the world tree, they are one of the many serpents that exist within the underworld. The wyrms process the dead and Nidhogg, the ‘biter from below’ uses its poisonous bite to also gnaw at the roots of Yggdrasil, causing harm to the tree. The world tree Yggdrasil can be seen as the human nervous system and Death Anxiety can be seen as the result of the traumatic poisoning by Nidhogg. Initiation into the mysteries involves a ritualised technique to overcome death anxiety and achieve a significantly more stable and balanced personality, one that is prescribed by many esoteric traditions as enlightenment. Consciousness is no longer drawn uncontrollably to fixate on pain in the past and then project negativity into the future, where it can cause the most harm.
