Tarot reading

Updated: Dec 9

After decades of using the Tarot I'm finally offering readings, it's been a long journey in making the decision to do so. In part this was due to personal concerns about being stigimatised for being more public about my spiritual practice and this effecting my ability get work teaching and how colleagues within media production might view me. It's a complicated attitude towards self oppression that stems from my family, especially my siblings. I guess this can be quite common within many Western families, that being spiritual is seen as soft and weak, unlikely to amount to anything, akin to being in the Arts (of which I am too).

In the past I had been much more open about my magick, promoting esoteric club nights and even appearing on television advocating the virtues of woo woo. But this changed around the time I graduated from my Bachelors Degree in Film, 9/11 happened causing the collapse of the film industry in the UK. This caused me to seek employment in education, a path that led to earning a PGCE (Post Graduate Certificate in Education). Suddenly I was a teacher, a role model and a responsible adult, including co-parenting twins, this changed me. I was still very political, trying to produce and direct a self funded film about Guantanamo Bay, whilst learning to deliver Media and Film studies A levels. One minute I was on the phone arranging a cameraman to film Terry Waite and Corin Redgrave talking about Camp Delta at Capitol Hill in the US, then next stepping into a class of 20+ teenagers to structurally analyse the movie Shrek. This left no space for a solid spiritual practice.

Both the documentary and the State education job would not end well and I was left reeling from stress induced insomnia and migraines (and an unacknowledged Pure-OCD). I joined a Master degree course in film and graduated into self employed video production and the private education sector. Still no woo woo.

It's taken nearly twenty years of transformation and practice to revive and pursue my spirituality, something I've only really considered from writing this blog post right now. I had become terrified of being my true self, employing limiting thoughts to refrain from being rejected, an outcast. Writing Wyrd was a huge step with live talks emerging from the articles I had written, becoming more open and public.

I've conducted many many readings for friends but never professionally for strangers, its a further step out from behind the self imposed exclusion.

Read below for more of my thoughts on the Tarot, as well as a testimonial from a recent reading.

'For me the Tarot has been an incredible tool of self discovery and a compass for navigating life's journey. I bought my first deck at eighteen, beginning with a simple contemporary set of cards, finally developing a relationship with the Thoth tarot over the last twenty years. In my mind divination is a practice of establishing a dialogue with the greater field of consciousness, and the denizens within.

The philosophy of the human condition contained with the tarot design helps to broaden our own understanding of our minds; thoughts and emotions, in relation to life's trials and tribulations. Sometimes the lessons the cards offer are difficult to comprehend and relate to, but over time they are likely to reveal themselves. People often irrationally fear the tarot, thinking of it as evil or dangerous, a conception portrayed in popular media, instead what they discover is a guide and tutor, willing to offer helpful insight.

Over the last thirty years I have been able to better tackle the outcomes from my own traumatic experiences and learn to dissolve self sabotaging and poor coping strategies. Deepening my understanding of myself and my life, allowing me to make better decisions and choices, tempering my reactions to upset and improving on my successes. This life long journey has led me to learn about psychology, shamanism, the occult and much more which I now wish to share with you.'

Testimonial

'Will is a very skilled tarot reader. His deep knowledge of the meanings and relationships between the cards, built over decades of study and practice, make for what I can only describe as the most penetrating and revealing readings I have ever had.

Unlike other readers I have known, Will tells it how it is. He doesn’t attempt to sugarcoat or throw things into a certain light; if there is difficulty or challenges in the situation, then he gives you this information undiluted - which allows you to take appropriate action (even if it’s not what you wanted to hear).

I trust Will to ask the right questions, which allow him to zero in on exactly what the cards are telling him - like a fractal snapshot of the situation, but put under the microscope and examined in all frequencies of the spectrum: from infrared to ultraviolet.

His knowledge of the relationships between the suits, the numbers, court cards and the Major Arcana is exemplary. He has a huge bank of past experiences with which to relate back, anchoring his readings in concrete examples from his own life and of those he has read for. His mind is like a library of esoteric knowledge, catalogued and cross referenced.

Will doesn’t use unnecessarily flowery language but, as a writer and poet, he is eminently capable of encapsulating the ineffable in metaphor and simile. His assessments, diagnoses and prescriptions are spot on (to use the vernacular).

His trusted deck is the beautiful and celebrated Thoth tarot (famous or infamous depending on who you’re speaking with) which is known to pull no punches. His method is intuitive and unlike any of the formulaic spreads you might find in run-of-the-mill “how to” books and websites. The cards speak eloquently through him and, as their translator and interpreter, you will be hard-pressed to find a more capable and effective diviner.'
