At the core of the shaman’s universe is the world tree, in the Northern Tradition this is Yggdrasil, the central column that supports three realms, upper, middle and lower. My design represents the tree as the central nervous system, the brain as the branches, the spinal column as the trunk and the nerves in the limbs as the roots.

The upper realm features the wings of illumination and the eye of consciousness and can be attributed to Asgard, home of the gods.

The middle realm or Midgard features the soul sigil over the heart chakra, where feelings and emotions are experienced within material reality.

The lower realm, Hel, features the wyrm, the kundalini serpent at the groin, the potent earth energy of reproduction. In the soil the mycelium network links the trees of the Earth allowing communication and the sharing of nutrients.

Hunin and Munin (Woden’s ravens) flank Yggdrasil, representing the cognitive faculties, as a means of traversing the astral plane and comprehending the mundane .

Below the open palms are the four elements, Earth, Air, Fire and Water, which the shaman has mastered.

I’ve rendered the design with a fusion of lino print and graffiti drips and runs, booth onto glass and onto marbled canvas. This creates loose psychedelic work that evokes Jean-Michel Basquiat. Artifacts for the 21st century shaman.
