My fascination with the 24 rune Elder Futhark has spanned over thirty years, not only as a symbol system for divination and magic, but also as a cultural cornerstone that holds within its shapes ancestral and spiritual knowledge. Unfortunately right wing connotations picked up in the twentieth century have tainted the runes and they continue to be used as a symbol of hate. My Futhark project aims to rehabilitate them, employing a Hip Hop graffiti sensibility to their design.
Approaching them like graff block lettering, I have produced a new contemporary font, in both analogue and digital form. Appearing as lino print, stencil art and clothing.
